Surface treatment of concrete

Since 2015 we have invested in extra recourses for product development for concrete treatment. It is well known that water glass can be used to improve concrete characteristics, but if you want to reach the best results, it is important to choose the correct treatment and product. For this reason, we are performing several tests which are aimed at concrete type and usability.

Right from the beginning we have focused on the environment, and we are working to develop environmentally friendly products. We have products ready, which can increase the attachment strength of concrete/mortar floors (Bollerup Jensen concrete strength), and a product which can reduce dust formation from concrete floors (Bollerup Jensen dust binder).

We are working on developing products, that can combine the concrete resistance towards chemicals, prolong the life of the concrete, reduce white extension and increase the waters closeness in the concrete. For this, we have our own analyzing laboratory, where we can test the strength of the concrete, how the concrete reacts to a humid environment, as well as its resistance towards acid and oil.

Future safety of the sewage network

Apart from the tests and analysis which we do ourselves in our lab, in 2017 we have introduced a product in cooperation with Aalborg University, the supply companies Hedensted Spildevand and Vejle Spildevand, advisory company DHI & Unisense A/S. The project is supported by the water sectors develop- and demonstration program, VUDP, and in the future will secure the sewage network against corrosion and reduce odour from the sewage.

It is estimated that corrosion of the wastewater network yearly will cost about 35 billion kr. worldwide. There is therefore a huge financial incentive to invest in new solutions, which can prolong the sewage systems life. Sulfur problems are generally bigger at higher temperatures, The participating companies can therefore see big export opportunities for the solutions which are being tested in the project.

We test our environmental and economical corrosion protection of concrete in this project. Apart from protecting the concrete against acid, it is expected that the treatment will change the concrete surface and change the growth of unwanted bacteria.

Product Tests

To check the effect of our treatments on concrete, we use several different test methods. For example, we use:

Strengthening bond

This is a test, where the strength on the surface of the concrete/mortar is being measured. It is important here to have a high strengthening bond before you put epoxy on a concrete floor, otherwise you will risk an uneven floor below the coating. We use a standard method (DS/EN 1542) to measure the strengthening bond on treated and untreated concrete/mortar.

Acid test

With this test, we can measure how well the concrete keeps when it is exposed to acid. The video will show how the acid etches the untreated mortar, while the other mortar can resist an acid attack – this is treated with our product. Concrete which can resist acid, has a lot of different usage. It is, for example, relevant in relation to the concrete which is used as silage storage in sewer pipes and slurry containers.

We are continuously working on developing and optimizing test methods, which are custom made for each individual product requirement.
