Outside the area which you would normally associate Bollerup Jensen, we are also working with a silicate based product which will be able to contribute, with all the new solutions, to the increasing needs to clean contaminated water, sewage and drinking water.
With this project, we are working with Aalborg University, in developing and testing coagulants prepared with water glass polymers, to clean rainwater – and in the future, also lake and drinking water.
The Environmental Protection Agency have also – through MUDP – chosen to support the project, ”Development of silica polymer for cleaning of surface water”. The purpose of the project is to remove phosphorous and heavy metals in collected rainwater before the water is discharged in lakes and streams. This is to avoid the toxic effects from heavy metals and algae growth caused by phosphorous.
How do coagulants work?
Phosphorous and heavy metals in rain runoffs from cities and roads are mainly bound to much nicer particles, the so-called colloids, or they will be found in a dissolved form. This means that a significant share of these pollutants cannot be settled effectively and therefore, for example, wet ponds in poor condition will be detained.
The substance detention can be increased substantially by collecting it in larger units and pollutants.
Why do new coagulants have to be developed?
The traditional projects are not a problem. They are among other strongly acidic and alkaline, which will affect the dosing equipment and the quality of the water, which will have to be cleaned.
New coagulants (water glass polymer) will be developed in this project, and it is expected that the coagulants characteristics will be improved due to the polymers high density. At the same time they are less corrosive than the traditional coagulants, as the Ph value is less acidic.
In June 2013 we applied for the patent in the manufacturing method of the water glass polymers.

MUDP – Environmental Technology- and Demonstrations Program, it is a program under Environmental- and Ministry of Environment and Food, which is supporting the development, testing and demonstration of eco-efficient technology.
Polymers – are composed of chains or a network of molecules. In the case of water glass polymers, it will be a network of silicon and oxygen.
Algae Growth – This will happen if there are too many algae growing in the water due to fertilizer.It is especially nitrate and phosphate, which is the reason for the high algae growth. The algae make the water unclear, and insufficient sunlight will get through to the water plants at the bottom. The high level of fertilizer can also induce depletion, as the bacteria in the water will be using oxygen to break down the algae.
Coagulants – have the ability to clump the small, destabilized particles in larger aggregates, very often with high density, which can be removed afterwards by precipitation or filtering.
Silicon – A normal occurring metal, it is found in the Earth’s crust, about 27% by mass
Colloids – Very small particles. The diameter can be between 0,0001 and 0,000001 mm. It takes a very long time for these particles to settle – approx. from 2-200 years pr. meter. Most of the bacteria are in comparison approx. 0,001 mm in diameter and a precipitation will take approx. 7 days pr. meter.
